TranscribeX is a native Mac app. Installing it takes a minute, and you don’t need an account.

System requirements

Download and install

  1. Download TranscribeX.dmg.
  2. Open the file and drag TranscribeX into your Applications folder.
  3. Open TranscribeX from Applications or Spotlight.

Or install with Homebrew:

brew install --cask transcribex

First launch: permissions and a model

The first time you open TranscribeX, a short Welcome to TranscribeX setup walks you through two pages. You can skip either and come back later.

  1. Permissions. Allow the ones you need now:
    • Microphone: “Required for microphone recording and live transcription.”
    • Screen Recording: “Required to capture app audio and video.” Needed for meetings and app recording.
    • Accessibility: “Required if using Dictation.”
    More on each in permissions.
  2. A model. Download a free local model to finish setup: Whisper Tiny for transcribing files, and Parakeet EOU 160ms for live transcription. Downloads continue in the background, and you can add more models later in Settings › Transcription Models.

On macOS 26 or later, Apple’s on-device model is also free and needs no download. For English it’s more accurate than Whisper Tiny, so it’s worth setting as your default in Settings › Transcription › Default Model.

Updates

TranscribeX updates itself through the standard Mac updater. To check for a new version, open Settings › About and click Check for Updates. Updates are free for Pro owners, with no subscription.

Uninstall

  1. Quit TranscribeX and drag it from Applications to the Trash.
  2. To remove downloaded models and data too, delete the model folders shown under Model Storage Path in each model pane before uninstalling, and your recordings folder (set in Settings › General › Save Destination).
  3. If you turned on the command line, delete the ~/.local/bin/tx link, or turn off Enable Command Line first.
