When people search for an offline transcription app, they usually want one of two things. Some need it to work without a connection: on a flight, on location, or on a network that blocks uploads. Others want to be sure their recordings never reach a server. Local transcription covers both, because the speech recognition model runs on the Mac itself. TranscribeX works this way.
The short version
- Transcription is local. Every built-in model runs on your Mac. The free version includes two of them, Whisper Tiny and Apple on-device.
- So is the rest of the pipeline. Speaker diarization, Voice Profiles and AI summaries with the built-in language model also run offline (Pro).
- Some things need internet, and only when you use them: the first model download, email, YouTube downloads, online AI providers and the optional online speech models.
- Any modern Mac. Apple Silicon is much faster because the models use the Neural Engine, but it is not required.
What works offline, and what needs a connection
| Feature | Offline? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Speech to text with local models | ✓ | Whisper, Parakeet, Qwen3 ASR, Nemotron, fine-tuned Whisper, after a one-time model download |
| Apple on-device model | ✓ | Built into macOS, nothing to download |
| Live transcription and captions | ✓ | Nemotron and Parakeet streaming models run locally |
| Dictation | ✓ | Speech never leaves the Mac |
| Speaker diarization and Voice Profiles | ✓ | pyannote pipeline on the Neural Engine, profiles stored locally |
| AI summary and chat, built-in model | ✓ | Local Qwen or Gemma model, or Apple Intelligence, after a one-click download |
| AI summary with Ollama or LM Studio | ✓ | If the model runs on the same Mac |
| Translation with Apple Translate | ✓ | Runs through macOS once the language pair is downloaded (System Settings › General › Language & Region › Translation Languages) |
| Export (TXT, SRT, VTT, PDF, CSV, Markdown, JSON) | ✓ | Files are written to your disk |
| Recording meetings from any Mac app | ✓ | The call itself needs internet; capture and transcription do not |
| First download of a model | ✗ | Once per model |
| Emailing the meeting summary | ✗ | Needs a connection to send |
| ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity and other online AI | ✗ | Optional; the transcript text goes to that provider |
| DeepL translation | ✗ | Optional online service |
| ElevenLabs Scribe, Mistral Voxtral | ✗ | Optional online speech models, off unless you pick them |
| Activating a Pro license | ✗ | Needs a connection once to activate; after that the app works offline |
| YouTube and web video download | ✗ | Transcribing the downloaded file is local |
The online options are there because some people want them, but the app never switches to one on its own. If you pick a local speech model and the built-in AI model, a recording goes from microphone to finished summary without leaving the Mac.
Local speech to text models
An offline transcription app is only as good as the models it can run. TranscribeX ships with a choice, and you can switch per file:
- OpenAI Whisper, from Tiny to Large V3 and Large V3 Turbo, in 100+ languages. Tiny is free.
- NVIDIA Parakeet V2 (English) and V3 (multilingual), up to 20x faster than Whisper.
- NVIDIA Nemotron streaming models for live captions in 30+ languages, with punctuation and capitalization.
- Qwen3 ASR, with a forced-aligner companion model for precise word-level timestamps.
- Apple on-device, built into macOS. It starts instantly and is free.
- Fine-tuned Whisper models for German, Swiss German, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, French, Hebrew and more.
Not sure which to use? The model guide compares them using the publishers’ own published accuracy and speed figures.
Offline from the recording to the summary
Plenty of apps transcribe locally and then send the transcript to a cloud model for the summary. That is a reasonable design, but it means the words still leave your Mac. TranscribeX can download a small language model that runs inside the app. It needs no API key or account, costs nothing per summary, and works offline. It writes key points, decisions and action items, and you can chat with a transcript or with one speaker’s part of it.
If you prefer a bigger model, you can point TranscribeX at Ollama or LM Studio on the same Mac and stay offline, or connect ChatGPT or Gemini when you are happy for the text to go online.
“great little app—get off the cloud ;)”
Offline speech recognition for meetings
Meetings are where offline speech recognition earns its keep. A call obviously needs internet, but the recording and everything after it does not. TranscribeX Pro detects calls in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Slack, Discord, Webex and browsers, records system audio and your microphone without a bot joining, then transcribes, names the speakers and writes the summary on your Mac. Only the optional email step needs a connection. How meeting transcription works.
Other local transcription apps for Mac
TranscribeX is not the only transcription app for Mac that runs locally, and you should know the options. MacWhisper also runs Whisper, Parakeet and Qwen3 ASR on the Mac. Superwhisper and VoiceInk are local-first dictation apps. Aiko is a simple one-time file transcriber. Meetily and Anarlog are open-source local meeting note takers. Where TranscribeX differs is that one app covers files, dictation, live captions and the full meeting cycle, with a built-in AI model so summaries stay local too. Cloud tools like Otter transcribe on their servers; we found no offline transcription option on their sites as of October 2026.
Offline transcription: FAQ
Does TranscribeX work without internet?
Yes. After you download a model once, transcription, dictation, speaker diarization and AI summaries with the built-in model all run on your Mac with no connection. The Apple on-device model needs no download at all.
Is local transcription as accurate as cloud transcription?
Accuracy depends on the model, not on where it runs. Larger models such as Whisper Large V3 Turbo make fewer mistakes than small ones such as Whisper Tiny, which trades some accuracy for speed. The model guide lists each publisher’s own accuracy figures, and the best test is your own audio with two or three models.
Which features need an internet connection?
Downloading a model the first time, emailing meeting summaries, downloading YouTube videos, DeepL translation, online AI providers such as ChatGPT or Gemini, and the optional ElevenLabs Scribe and Mistral Voxtral models.
Do I need an Apple Silicon Mac?
No. TranscribeX works on most modern Macs. Apple Silicon is much faster because the models run on the Neural Engine.
