If you already know MacWhisper, you know the idea: speech recognition models that run on your Mac, so recordings never go to a server. TranscribeX is built on the same principle. Both apps are good. They have grown in different directions, and this page lays out where, so you can choose the one that fits how you work.
The short version
- Same foundation. Both are native Mac apps that transcribe locally with Whisper, NVIDIA Parakeet and Qwen3 ASR, detect meetings, and record without a bot joining the call.
- TranscribeX runs the whole meeting cycle. After the call it can name speakers, write the AI summary with a model built into the app, export, and email the recap automatically — matched to your calendar event.
- Price. TranscribeX Pro is $39 once. MacWhisper Pro is €64 once. Both have a free version.
- MacWhisper is stronger on file workflows — integrations like Notion and Zapier, more cloud transcription providers, and an iPhone and iPad app.

Where TranscribeX goes further: the hour after the meeting
Recording a meeting is the easy part. The work is everything after it: figure out who said what, pull out the decisions, file the notes, send them around. TranscribeX treats that as one pipeline you set up once.
- Detect the call when it starts in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Slack, Discord, Webex or any app you add.
- Match it to the event in your Mac calendars, so the recording is called “Q4 planning”, not “Recording 14”.
- Record audio and, if you want, video, so the slides stay next to the words.
- Transcribe locally with the model you picked.
- Name the speakers with Voice Profiles — no limit on how many people were in the room.
- Summarize into key points, decisions and action items, with your own notes woven in.
- Export and email the summary and transcript as soon as the meeting ends — or wait for you to review and send with one click.
Each step is optional. Many people start with detection and transcription only, then switch on summaries and email once they trust the results. Here is the full meeting cycle in detail.
“TranscribeX has been great! I am on 20+ calls weekly and this tool has become invaluable for call transcripts, and without any subscription or sending my data off to the cloud! I've emailed support on a few occasions and Ethan has been extremely responsive, top notch support!”
AI summaries without an API key
MacWhisper can summarize and chat with a transcript through your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key, or through a local model you run in Ollama or LM Studio. TranscribeX supports the same kinds of providers — and it can also download a small language model that runs inside the app. It installs with one click, needs nothing else on your Mac, costs nothing per summary, and keeps the transcript on your machine.
Speakers: no ceiling, and names that stick
MacWhisper’s 15.2 update brought speaker recognition for up to eight speakers. TranscribeX runs the open pyannote community-1 diarization pipeline on the Neural Engine, detects the number of speakers by itself with no upper limit, and remembers people: save a voice once as a Voice Profile and that person is named in every future transcript, summary and export. How TranscribeX speaker diarization works.
What it costs
Both apps are one-time purchases, which already puts them ahead of most meeting tools. TranscribeX Pro is $39 with free updates; MacWhisper Pro is €64. Both have a free version: TranscribeX’s free version transcribes without limits using Whisper Tiny and Apple’s on-device model, and includes dictation and YouTube downloads.
| Plan | Billing | 1 year | 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| TranscribeX Pro | One-time, free updates | $39 | $39 |
| MacWhisper Pro | One-time (Gumroad), lifetime updates | €64 | €64 |
| Superwhisper Pro | $84.99/year ($8.49/month monthly; $249.99 lifetime) | $84.99 | $254.97 |
Cheapest paid individual plan at list price (USD unless marked). Prices checked October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page (MacWhisper, Superwhisper). TranscribeX Pro is a one-time purchase with free updates; the free version has no time limit.
Where MacWhisper is the better choice
MacWhisper is a mature, well-loved app with a long track record, and in some areas it does more than TranscribeX:
- Integrations. It can send transcripts straight to Notion, Obsidian, Zapier, Make, n8n or a webhook. TranscribeX exports files and offers a CLI and an MCP server, but has no built-in Notion or Zapier connection.
- More cloud providers. If you sometimes want cloud transcription, MacWhisper connects to Deepgram, ElevenLabs and Gladia.
- iPhone and iPad. MacWhisper has a mobile app; TranscribeX is Mac only.
- Apple integrations. Its latest release adds Siri, Spotlight and Shortcuts integration on macOS 27.
Choose TranscribeX if…
- Most of what you transcribe is meetings
- You want the recap summarized, filed and emailed without touching it
- You want AI summaries without setting up an API key or Ollama
- Your meetings have more than eight people, or the same people every week
- You’d rather pay $39 than €64
Choose MacWhisper if…
- You mostly transcribe files and subtitles, not meetings
- You push transcripts into Notion, Obsidian or Zapier
- You need the same app on iPhone or iPad
- You want Deepgram or Gladia as cloud options
Switching from MacWhisper
There is nothing to migrate. Install TranscribeX next to MacWhisper and run both on the same file or the same call:
- Download TranscribeX and open it — no account needed.
- Drop in a recording you already transcribed in MacWhisper and compare the results with the same model.
- Turn on meeting detection, join a short test call, and check the transcript, speakers and summary.
- If it fits, upgrade to Pro for $39. If not, the free version keeps working forever.
MacWhisper vs TranscribeX: FAQ
Is MacWhisper free?
MacWhisper has a free version with basic transcription, microphone recording and dictation. Speaker recognition, meeting recording, YouTube transcription and batch processing are in MacWhisper Pro. TranscribeX also has a free version, with unlimited transcription using Whisper Tiny and Apple’s on-device model.
How much is MacWhisper Pro?
MacWhisper Pro is a one-time purchase of €64 on its website (checked October 2026); the App Store version uses in-app purchases instead. TranscribeX Pro is a one-time $39.
Does MacWhisper record meetings automatically?
Yes. MacWhisper Pro detects when meetings start and stop in apps like Zoom, Teams and Webex and records them without a bot. TranscribeX does the same, and can then also summarize, export and email the meeting automatically.
Do both apps work offline?
Yes. Both download speech recognition models once and transcribe on your Mac without an internet connection. In TranscribeX, speaker diarization and AI summaries with the built-in model also run offline.
Which one is more accurate?
When both apps run the same model — for example Whisper Large V3 Turbo or Parakeet — accuracy is essentially the same, because the model does the recognition. The fairest test is to run your own recording through both. Compare the models here.
