The best transcription app for a Mac depends less on accuracy than you’d think. Most local apps run the same open models (Whisper, NVIDIA Parakeet, Qwen3 ASR), so on the same model they produce nearly the same transcript. What separates them is the job they’re built around: meetings, files, dictation or subtitles.
Every app on this list transcribes on your Mac, so it works offline and your audio isn’t uploaded. I’ve grouped them by job and been specific about price and limits. I build TranscribeX, one of the nine; details on the others come from their own sites, checked October 2026.
Best Mac transcription app for each job
- Meetings: TranscribeX ($39 once).
- Files, podcasts and subtitles: MacWhisper (€64 once).
- Dictation: Superwhisper ($84.99/year) or VoiceInk ($25 once).
- Simple file transcription on Mac and iPhone: Aiko ($24 once).
- Free and open source: Buzz for files, Meetily or Anarlog for meetings.
- Nothing to install: Apple Notes on macOS 15 or later.
What makes a good transcription app for Mac
- Model choice. Whisper covers 99 languages. Parakeet is much faster for English and European languages: in our M4 Pro test it ran about 6× faster than Whisper Large V3 with similar accuracy. Parakeet vs Whisper.
- Apple Silicon support. Apps that use the Neural Engine and GPU are dramatically faster than generic ports.
- What happens around the transcript: speaker labels, summaries, subtitle export, batch processing, integrations.
- Price model. Several of the best Mac apps are one-time purchases, which is rare in this category.

Best for meetings
TranscribeX

TranscribeX is built around the meeting. With Pro it detects calls in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Slack, Discord, Webex or any app you add, records without a bot, transcribes locally, labels speakers (Voice Profiles name recurring people), writes a summary with a language model built into the app and can email the recap. It also covers files, YouTube downloads, live captions and dictation. The free version transcribes without a time limit; Pro is $39 once. It’s Mac only and has no Notion or Zapier integration.
Meetily and Anarlog
The two open-source options. Meetily transcribes meetings locally with Whisper or Parakeet and summarizes through Ollama; speaker labels and auto-detection cost $120 a year. Anarlog is a local-first meeting notepad with unlimited free on-device transcription. Both take more setup. How they compare for meetings.
Best for files, podcasts and subtitles
MacWhisper
The most complete file workflow on the Mac: batch jobs, YouTube and URLs, watched folders, subtitle translation, an inline video player, exports to SRT, VTT, DOCX, PDF and Markdown, and integrations with Notion, Obsidian, Zapier, Make and n8n. Since version 15.2 it also records meetings with a live transcript and up to eight speakers. Pro is €64 once, and there’s an iPhone and iPad version.
Aiko
Sindre Sorhus’s Aiko does one thing: drop in a file, get a transcript, export it as text, SRT, JSON or CSV. It uses Whisper Large v2 on the Mac, costs $24 once and includes the iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro versions. No live transcription, speakers or summaries, and the current version needs macOS 26.
Buzz
A free, MIT-licensed Whisper app that imports audio and video and exports text and subtitles. Plain interface, no cost, and a good choice if you want open source. Install with brew install --cask buzz.
Best for dictation
Superwhisper
The most advanced dictation app here: AI modes for messages, email and notes, context awareness, custom vocabulary, and very fast cloud models when you want them. Every Whisper model is free; Pro ($84.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime) adds Parakeet, AI modes, file transcription, system audio and speaker separation, and one license covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
VoiceInk
An open-source (GPL-3.0) dictation app with an unusually wide choice of local models, including Parakeet, Nemotron, Whisper and Apple Speech, plus a file queue. $25 once for one Mac, Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later only. It doesn’t record meetings or label speakers.
TranscribeX and MacWhisper both include system-wide dictation too, free in TranscribeX, but neither tries to match Superwhisper’s modes. MacWhisper vs Superwhisper vs TranscribeX.
Built into macOS: Apple Notes
Since macOS 15 Sequoia, Notes can record audio and produce a transcript when you stop, and Voice Memos shows transcripts too. Nothing to install, and fine for a quick voice note or a lecture. It isn’t designed for transcribing existing files, and it supports fewer languages than Whisper-based apps.
“TranscribeX has been great! I am on 20+ calls weekly and this tool has become invaluable for call transcripts, and without any subscription or sending my data off to the cloud! I've emailed support on a few occasions and Ethan has been extremely responsive, top notch support!”
How to pick in five minutes
- What do you transcribe most? Meetings → TranscribeX. Files and subtitles → MacWhisper. Your own voice → Superwhisper or VoiceInk.
- Do you need it on your phone? MacWhisper, Superwhisper and Aiko have mobile versions; TranscribeX doesn’t.
- Subscriptions a deal-breaker? TranscribeX, MacWhisper, VoiceInk and Aiko are one-time purchases.
- Still unsure? Most have free versions or trials. Run the same recording through two of them with the same model and compare what you get around the transcript.
Mac transcription apps FAQ
What is the best transcription app for Mac?
It depends on the job. For meetings, TranscribeX automates recording, transcription, speakers and summaries locally for $39 once. For files and subtitles, MacWhisper has the deepest workflow. For dictation, Superwhisper is the most advanced. All three transcribe on the Mac.
Which Mac transcription apps work offline?
TranscribeX, MacWhisper, Superwhisper (with local models), VoiceInk, Aiko, Buzz, Meetily and Anarlog all transcribe on your Mac without an internet connection once their models are downloaded.
Is there a free transcription app for Mac?
Yes. TranscribeX’s free version transcribes files with no time limit, MacWhisper has a free version with subtitle export, and Buzz is free and open source. Compare the free options.
Which transcription app is most accurate on Mac?
Accuracy depends mostly on the model, not the app. Apps that offer Parakeet, Whisper Large V3 or Qwen3 ASR give similar results when they run the same model. On the Open ASR Leaderboard’s English sets, Qwen3 ASR 1.7B (5.76% average WER) and Parakeet V2 (6.05%) both beat Whisper Large V3 (7.44%), and Parakeet is far faster.
