Dictation apps live or die on two things: how fast the words appear and how little you have to fix afterwards. Wispr Flow is very good at both, and it works the same on a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone. The catch for some people is in its privacy policy: “Transcription always happens in the cloud.” TranscribeX takes the local route. You hold a key, speak, and the text lands at your cursor in any Mac app, recognized on your Mac. This page compares the two fairly, including where Wispr Flow is the better tool.

The short version

  • Where your voice goes. Wispr Flow transcribes every dictation in the cloud. TranscribeX transcribes on your Mac, so it also works offline.
  • Free plans. Wispr Flow Free allows 2,000 words a week on desktop. Dictation is included in TranscribeX’s free version.
  • Price. Wispr Flow Pro is $12 a month billed yearly. TranscribeX Pro is $39 once and adds faster models, AI polish and full meeting transcription.
  • Wispr Flow is stronger if you dictate on Windows, iPhone or Android too, or need team dictionaries and admin controls.

Is Wispr Flow free?

Wispr Flow has a free plan with a weekly allowance: 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile. For a rough sense of scale, 2,000 words is a few long emails or a couple of pages of notes. Once you go past it, you need Pro at $12 a month on a yearly plan or $15 month to month. Students and educators get 50% off Pro.

In TranscribeX, dictation is part of the free version, with no weekly word allowance. It uses the free speech models, Apple’s on-device recognizer and Whisper Tiny, and needs no account. The free version also transcribes audio and video files and microphone recordings without limits, so you get a full transcription app along with the dictation.

More than dictation

Wispr Flow is mainly a dictation app, with a newer Notetaker for meetings. TranscribeX started as a transcription app and grew dictation later, so the rest of the app is broad: import audio and video files, download from YouTube, transcribe in 100+ languages, export subtitles, and with Pro, record meetings automatically.

Both meeting tools record from your computer without a bot. The difference is again where the audio is processed. Wispr Flow’s Notetaker transcribes in the cloud. TranscribeX Pro detects calls in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and other apps, transcribes them on your Mac, names the speakers, writes a summary and can email it after the call. More on meeting transcription.

What each costs

Wispr Flow Pro is $144 a year on yearly billing, $180 paying monthly. TranscribeX Pro is $39 once, with free updates, and dictation already works in the free version.

Is Wispr Flow free?

Wispr Flow has a free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile. Pro costs $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly (checked October 2026). Dictation is included in TranscribeX’s free version.

Does Wispr Flow work offline?

Wispr Flow’s privacy page says transcription always happens in the cloud, and we found no offline mode on its site. TranscribeX dictation runs on your Mac and works without an internet connection.

Is TranscribeX dictation as accurate as Wispr Flow?

It depends on the model and your voice. With Pro you can dictate with NVIDIA Parakeet V2, which the Open ASR Leaderboard paper ranked 10th overall among 86 systems (English average word error rate 6.05%), or with Whisper Large V3 Turbo. The best test is to dictate the same paragraph into both. Compare the models.
