VoiceInk and TranscribeX both turn speech into text on your Mac with local models. They overlap on dictation and on transcribing audio files. They part ways at meetings: TranscribeX records and processes calls, while VoiceInk’s site doesn’t describe meeting recording at all. If you searched for a VoiceInk alternative because you need that, read on. If you only dictate, you may want to stay where you are.
The short version
- VoiceInk is dictation-first and open source. Its code is on GitHub under GPL-3.0, and it supports Parakeet, Nemotron, Whisper, Cohere Transcribe, SenseVoice and Apple Speech locally, plus a dozen cloud providers with your own key.
- VoiceInk costs less. $25 once for one Mac, $39 for two, $49 for three. TranscribeX Pro is $39 once for one Mac at a time.
- TranscribeX handles meetings. It detects calls, records your Mac’s audio, names speakers and writes and emails the summary. We found none of that on VoiceInk’s site as of October 2026.
- Hardware. VoiceInk needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later. TranscribeX also runs on older Intel Macs, more slowly.

VoiceInk details from tryvoiceink.com, its documentation (local models, cloud providers, file transcription, license management) and its GitHub repository, checked October 2026. “Not found on its site” means VoiceInk’s public pages don’t mention the feature, not that we tested the app and found it missing. Corrections are welcome at support@transcribex.io.
When VoiceInk is the better buy
We would rather say this plainly. If you want a dictation app and nothing else, VoiceInk is hard to beat:
- It is cheaper. $25 is $14 less than TranscribeX Pro, and the $39 and $49 licenses cover two or three Macs.
- It is open source. You can read the code, check what leaves your machine, or build it yourself for free.
- Its dictation does more. Context-aware modes, Smart Replace, an assistant mode and quick notes saved to a Markdown journal go further than TranscribeX’s hold-a-key dictation with AI polish.
- More cloud choices. If you want very fast cloud recognition with your own key, VoiceInk connects to more providers.
- It has an iPhone app. TranscribeX is Mac only.
Note that a Mac license doesn’t cover the iPhone app, according to VoiceInk’s license docs.
When you need a VoiceInk alternative: meetings and long recordings
Dictation is short: a sentence, an email, a message. A one-hour call with five people is a different problem. You need the other side of the call, not just your microphone. You need to know who said what. And afterwards you need a summary someone can read in two minutes. That is the part TranscribeX was built for.
- Calls are caught for you. TranscribeX notices when a meeting starts in Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Slack, Discord, Webex, a browser or the Phone app, and records system audio and your microphone without a bot joining.
- Speakers get names. Speaker diarization runs locally on the Neural Engine with no limit on speakers. Save a voice once as a Voice Profile and that person is labelled in every later transcript. How it works.
- The summary writes itself. A small language model built into the app writes key points, decisions and action items, with no API key and nothing to install. You can also use ChatGPT, Gemini, Ollama or LM Studio.
- The recap goes out. Exports and the summary email can run automatically when the call ends.
If those are the reasons you are looking around, see meeting transcription in TranscribeX.
“I've bought it and was very happy with the performance. Now I suddenly got the ability to do dictation which makes me very happy too. Keep improving it! Thanks Ethan”
Models: both apps give you a real choice
Both apps let you pick the model instead of hiding it. Each one has something the other doesn’t. VoiceInk adds Cohere Transcribe and SenseVoice. TranscribeX adds Qwen3 ASR with precise word timings and fine-tuned Whisper models for languages such as German, Swiss German, Korean and Arabic. For English, NVIDIA Parakeet is the fast choice in both. For many languages, Whisper Large V3 Turbo is the usual default.
What it costs
Both are one-time purchases with lifetime updates. VoiceInk is cheaper on one Mac. TranscribeX also has a free version with no time limit (Whisper Tiny and Apple’s on-device model, dictation included), while VoiceInk offers a 7-day trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee. TranscribeX Pro has a 7-day refund.
| Plan | Billing | 1 year | 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| TranscribeX Pro | One-time, free updates | $39 | $39 |
| VoiceInk Solo | One-time, 1 Mac ($39 for 2 Macs) | $25 | $25 |
| Superwhisper Pro | $84.99/year ($8.49/month monthly; $249.99 lifetime) | $84.99 | $254.97 |
Cheapest paid individual plan at list price (USD unless marked). Prices checked October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page (VoiceInk, Superwhisper). TranscribeX Pro is a one-time purchase with free updates; the free version has no time limit.

VoiceInk vs TranscribeX: FAQ
Is VoiceInk free?
VoiceInk’s source code is free under GPL-3.0, so you can build it yourself. The ready-to-use app costs $25 once for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with a 7-day trial (checked October 2026).
Can VoiceInk record meetings?
We did not find meeting recording, system audio capture or speaker recognition on VoiceInk’s site or docs as of October 2026. It is built for dictation and file transcription. TranscribeX records meetings from Zoom, Teams, Meet and other apps.
Does TranscribeX work on Intel Macs?
Yes. TranscribeX runs on most modern Macs. Apple Silicon is much faster because the models use the Neural Engine, but it is not required. VoiceInk requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later.
What is the best VoiceInk alternative for meetings?
Look for an app that records system audio and labels speakers. Among local Mac apps, TranscribeX and MacWhisper both detect and record meetings. TranscribeX also writes and emails the summary afterwards.
